SGMUN24 Conference Recap: Committees in Action

The St. Gallen Model United Nations (SGMUN24) brought together passionate delegates to address pressing global challenges across various committees. From humanitarian crises to ideological conflicts, here’s a summary of the impactful debates, resolutions, and outcomes achieved during the conference:


1. United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

Topic: The Syrian Humanitarian CrisisThe Security Council worked tirelessly to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria. A Resolution was passed focusing on the immediate protection of civilians, ceasefires, and cross-border humanitarian assistance. Notable elements included:

  • Condemnation of all attacks on civilians and medical facilities.

  • Emphasis on respecting humanitarian corridors and international law.

  • Support for de-escalation through dialogue and cooperation with the Astana Process​​.

The council highlighted the devastating impact of the 2023 earthquake, particularly in the Aleppo and Latakia governorates, and stressed the need for reconstruction efforts and safe refugee return.


2. UNICEF Committee

Topic: Protecting Children and Upholding Their Rights in Conflict ZonesUNICEF delegates demonstrated a commitment to safeguarding children amidst conflicts, adopting multiple resolutions with key focuses:

  • Establishing humanitarian corridors for immediate aid delivery​.

  • Developing mobile clinics and educational platforms for displaced children​.

  • Funding trauma-focused psychosocial support and child soldier reintegration programs​.

  • Promoting awareness campaigns on child marriage and exploitation while addressing the root causes of poverty and conflict​.

The resolutions aimed to strengthen local stability while respecting state sovereignty, ensuring long-term child protection and education.


3. UN Women

Topic: Combatting Gender-Based ViolenceThe UN Women committee addressed the systemic nature of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Delegates passed resolutions advocating for:

  • Strengthening justice systems and eliminating harmful cultural practices like FGM and child marriage.

  • Expanding funding for educational programs to raise awareness and empower women​.

  • Encouraging global campaigns such as HeForShe and the UNiTE initiative to involve men and communities in combating GBV.

The committee’s deliberations underscored the urgent need for multilateral efforts to dismantle patriarchal structures and protect women’s autonomy.


4. Historical NATO and Warsaw Pact

Topic: The Prague Spring Crisis (1968)The Historical NATO and Warsaw Pact committees recreated the tense Cold War-era debates during the Prague Spring. Key highlights included:

  • NATO delegates condemned the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, citing the suppression of liberal reforms and self-determination​.

  • The Warsaw Pact justified their intervention, upholding ideological unity and addressing "counter-revolutionary threats"​.

The discussions reflected broader tensions between the Soviet Union and Western powers, with delegates debating alternative paths to socialism and the role of military interventions in ideological conflicts.


5. European Broadcasting Union (EBU)

Topic: Reforms to the Eurovision Song ContestDelegates proposed reforms aimed at enhancing the transparency and governance of the Eurovision Song Contest, including:

  • Ethical sponsorship guidelines to align with the EBU’s values.

  • Suspension criteria for member states violating democratic principles​.

The proposed changes reflected a balance between artistic celebration and ethical responsibility.


6. International Press Corps (IPC)

The IPC brought an engaging dynamic to the committees, reporting on debates, leaks, and key developments. Their presence ensured transparency and heightened the realism of the conference.



SGMUN24 showcased the power of diplomacy, critical thinking, and collaboration. Delegates tackled real-world issues, from the humanitarian crisis in Syria to the ideological divides of the Cold War, demonstrating leadership and creativity in crafting resolutions. The conference truly embodied the spirit of global cooperation and youth engagement in solving today’s most pressing challenges.
