As we move into the final months of the year, the countdown to the St. Gallen Model United Nations (SGMUN) Conference 2024 has begun. From December 5th to 8th, students and young professionals from around the world will gather in the beautiful city of St. Gallen to engage in dynamic discussions, test their diplomatic skills, and make lifelong connections.
But SGMUN isn’t just about committee sessions and debates—it’s about an entire experience. Every year, the conference draws MUNers not only for its renowned academic rigor but also for the vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that sets it apart. After a one-year hiatus, the anticipation for the 2024 edition is higher than ever, with an exciting blend of tradition and innovation.
Building the 2024 Conference: A Global Effort
Behind this year’s conference is a highly diverse Secretariat. Formed by Dorka and Egan, the team consists of 10 dedicated members from three universities, each representing a different part of the world. Together, they bring perspectives from 10 different countries, a testament to SGMUN’s commitment to fostering a truly international community.
With the collaboration of UNYA, the umbrella organization for Swiss MUN societies, this year’s SGMUN has a broader mission—to help reignite the MUN scene across Switzerland and beyond. The 2024 conference is set to be a critical moment in this revitalization effort.
What to Expect This Year: Committees and Special Features
At the heart of the conference are, of course, the committee sessions. This year’s lineup promises to challenge delegates with a mix of classic and specialized committees. Alongside mainstays, delegates will have the opportunity to engage in unique simulations like the International Press Corps (IPC) and explore the intersection of historical geopolitics through committees focused on HNATO and the Warsaw Pact.
One particularly exciting addition is a committee dedicated to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which will delve into the intricacies of the Eurovision Song Contest, as Europe eagerly awaits Switzerland’s role as next year’s host. This blend of diplomacy and pop culture reflects the evolving nature of global cooperation and how soft power can influence international relations.
The SGMUN Experience: More Than Just a Conference
While the academic aspects of SGMUN are undoubtedly central, it’s the experience outside of the sessions that often makes the most lasting impact on participants. The Secretariat is busy planning a range of social events that will allow delegates to connect and unwind. Though the final details are still being fine-tuned, attendees can expect an unforgettable mix of festive fun—last sessions Ugly Christmas Sweater Party was a particular highlight, and this year promises new surprises. The gala night is another event not to be missed, offering a chance to celebrate in style while reflecting on the week’s accomplishments.
