The two-part Starters Debate on the human rights situation at the US-Mexican border marked a significant milestone for SGMUN, with a high level of participation and constructive discussions. The event drew nearly 40 attendees in the first week and 30 in the second, underscoring the growing engagement and interest in complex global issues among members.
The debate was a remarkable success, culminating in the adoption of a comprehensive resolution that addresses critical human rights concerns. The resolution highlights key issues at the US-Mexican border, such as overcrowded detention facilities, family separations, and the vulnerability of migrants, particularly women and children, to exploitation and violence. A joint task force between the United States and Mexico has been proposed, focusing on humanitarian aid, security, and transparency in border enforcement practices.
Special recognition goes to the delegations of Mexico and Austria for their outstanding contributions throughout the debate, which earned them the Pitcher of the Debate award. Their diplomacy, expertise, and constructive engagement were instrumental in shaping the final resolution and setting a high standard for future debates.
The resolution itself addresses not only the immediate human rights challenges but also the broader issues that drive migration, such as corruption and climate change. It calls for continued cooperation across the Americas to tackle root causes and ensure that border management policies comply with international human rights standards.
A heartfelt congratulations goes to all participants for their enthusiasm, thoughtful contributions, and dedication. It was truly remarkable to see so many new faces come together and be this productive and diplomatic in addressing the human rights situation. This event was the first debate of the semester and has set a positive tone for the discussions ahead. The success of this debate shows the collective strength and commitment of the SGMUN community to foster informed, solution-oriented discourse on some of the world’s most pressing issues.
With this strong start, we look forward to continuing to host meaningful debates that challenge perspectives and contribute to global conversations.
